Theย Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtlesย are no stranger to crossovers in the comic world. Even back in their Mirage days they were crossing over with the likes ofย Cerebus the Aardvark, Usagi Yojimbo,ย and even theย Flaming Carrot.ย Recently theyโve shared adventures with theย Ghostbusters,ย Mighty Morphinโ Power Rangers, and a whole multi-dimensional trilogy withย Batmanย and company.ย
But there are appearances so brief that they may just fall between the cracks. Thatย couldย be because they simply arenโt very notable but, as Turtlefans, I feel we need to know as much as mutantly possible when it comes to our favorite teenaged turtle teens, right? So I gathered three brief cameos from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles thatย Iย personally remember from my childhood days. And, hey, maybe youโve read these too!
Garfield Meets The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
When: Winter 1992
Where: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Magazine
Batman and the Joker. Han Solo and Boba Fett. Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior. Garfield and The Ninja Turtles. Sometimes when mega powers collide, real magic happens. Turtlemania and Garfieldmania are running wildโฆbefore this wave eventually crashesโฆthey need to meet. Why? Pizza of course. Itโs kinda like lasagna, right?
A brief one page comic written by Jim Davis, the creator of Garfield, and inked by none other than Peter Laird gave us a brief glimpse into a world without rules. A world where lasagna eating orange cats and ninja turtled teens lock horns.
Garfield approaches the sewer dressed as a Turtle, and introduces himself to the Ninja Turtles as โGarfelloโ, brandishing a pizza cutter as his signature weapon. He suggests the Turtles go out on patrol while he guards their pizza, in an obvious ploy to sneak the food for himself. The Turtles kick Garfield out of their lair, realizing heโs not a real Turtle at all. Garfield is defeated as Odie is seen wearing a turtle shell on his head. The Turtles question how Garfield talked without moving his mouth. Brilliance.
On August 6, 2019, Viacom acquired the rights to the Garfield franchise (the comics, merchandise and animated cartoons) from creator Jim Davis and that the franchise will be controlled under the Nickelodeon brand, thus making Garfield part of the same family of characters as our Ninja Turtles.
In fact, if you head to Garfield on social mediaโฆalready youโll see the classic fat cat acknowledging the Ninja Turtles. You might think this was a brief one page comic created nearly 30 years agoโฆI call itย long-term-storytelling.ย As of this writing, there’s even officially licensed collectables available of this very brief appearance nobody knows about.

Sonic The Hedgehog
When: February 1994
Where: Sonic the Hedgehog Issue 10
Sonic the Hedgehog is still a largely popular character originating from the Sega video game series. If you were a child in the 1990โs thereโs no doubt you hadย someย sort of crossover yourself with the blue blur. I didnโt even own a Sega Genesis, yet I devoured anything Sonic I could get my hands on. Which includedย thisย very comic. This iteration was a long-running Archie Comic series that had been published for 24 years. Sonicโs comics were then subsequently picked up by IDW Publishing (sounds a bit familiar, right?).
While theย Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventuresย comics were still in print, the Turtles made a cameo appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog #10, where all four turtles were seen in the background during Sonicโs trek through the sewers, the brothers comment that theyโre in the wrong comic book. As a younginโ I remember reading this issue a few times over simply because the Turtles made an appearance. I didnโt understand publisher rights or anything like thatโฆso seeing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles appear (briefly) in my Sonic The Hedgehog adventure sort of rocked my little world.ย
I even covered the ads in this very comic back in an edition of Ad Nauseam . It’s moments like this where I realize how alarming I spend my time. Should I go see a therapist?
Unknown to me at the timeโฆbut Michaelangelo made a brief appearance previously in Sonic the Hedgehog #2! The only way these comics could get more โ90s is if they were coated in Dunkaroo frosting while playing Technotronic.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Meet Archie
When: Spring 1991
Where: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Meet Archie Special
Since the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures comics were published under the Archie comics banner, itโs no surprise that they had a crossover with Archie and the gang themselves. I mean Archie is practically known to have absolutely bizarre crossovers with the likes of The Predator and The Punisherโฆso whatโs a few mutant ninja turtles anyway? The 64-page special hit in Spring 1991 yet despite the cover and advertising the Turtles and Archie only crossed over in one of the four short stories.
The story in question โGreen Legs and Gamsโ happens when Cuddly Cowlick pukes up the Turtles in the R I V E R D A L E dimension. Archie and Betty witness this because they were swappinโ spit in privateโฆand now fear theyโve seen an alien invasion. They warn Riverdale who rightfully laughs in their facesโฆas our โdisguisedโ Ninja Turtles pop into town. Betty gets kidnapped by dudes claiming to be the IRS, which leads to the Turtles teaming up to rescue her with Archie and the gang.
They track the kidnappers down to a roach motel, the Turtles do their ninja thing, and they save Betty. Betty thanks Archie for some reason( who did NOTHING) but not the humanoid turtle fighters that saved her. They all go to Popโs and celebrate with a pizza partyโฆas the kids of Riverdale look on and assume itโs some sort of weird costume fetish party they didnโt know about.
These bizarre times call for bizarre crossovers. But whatโs interesting to me is how these characters are not onlyย stillย around but theyโre thriving! Theย Ninja Turtlesย are still pop culture icons.ย Garfieldย lives in comics, meme-status, a television show, as well as a recent animated movie.ย Sonic the Hedgehogย has a trilogy of hit live action films and still has relevant games hitting consoles. Andย Archieโsย Riverdaleย reigned on the CW as well asย Sabrinaย on Netflix. The more things changeโฆthe more they stay the same perhaps? And although these are more cameos than anything else, itโs always interesting to see the interactions the Turtles have with what may be some of our other favorite characters. Iโm still holding out for a Ninja Turtle/Flintstones crossoverโฆbut Iโm not holding my breath.ย
Yabba Dabba-Bunga, Dudes.

The late 1980s throughout the early 1990s was arguably the height ofย Turtlemania. During that time slapping the image of one or all of our favorite turtle brethren almost always led to dollar signs. Iโve done a lot of research into the downright bizarre marketing of the TMNT through the decades of my fandom.
Want to learn Karate from the Ninja Turtles? They got you covered.
Remember Kid Cuisine? There’s a Ninja Turtle version of that.
Tiny handheld version of their retro pinball machine? It exists for some reason.
From nasty looking bootlegs figures to the official Ninja Turtles shaving kit, itโs safe to say that during this era โCowabungaโ made cold hard cash.

TMNT always had your merchandising needs coveredโฆno matter how hard you hit rock bottom.
And while theย Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtlesย were taking on Krang and Shredder on our televisions and in our comic books, Russia had the Ninja Turtles doing things aย littleย differently in the form of literature. โNinja Turtlesโ was a series of 33 illustrated childrenโs books made possible byย Minsk Publishingย sometime around the late 1980s through the mid 1990s. It is very difficult to find any reliable information on this series. But, as fans, weย doย know they areย veryย bootlegged. Yet upon viewing the illustrations within these wondrous pirated pieces, I canโt help but to think they may just be 33 of the most breathtaking adventures the TMNT have ever embarked on.

(Left) The Turtles get trapped in a Salvadore Dahli Painting (Middle) The Brothers purchase a fantasy sword from a sketchy online retail store (Right) The Turtles meet up with a very sensual Batman during Comic Con weekend.
With such imaginative and inspiring titles as, โNinja Turtles Against Mafiaโ, โNinja Turtles Against The Long Old Manโ , and โNinja Turtles and Privy Counselorโ I wouldnโt know a soul who wouldnโt want to crack open one of these bad boys and starting reading. These versions of the TMNT donโt seem to stick to New York City, in fact, they donโt seem to stick to any type of logical reality within any sort of actual time frame. Outerspace, third world villages, war torn towns, Egypt, military bases, and dinosaur island(s) seem to be the regular stomping grounds of these heroes in a halfshell.

(Left) Leo takes a nap at a local retirement home (Middle) The Turtles/Cannibal Holocaust crossover goes as expected (Right) Raph upholds his โCool but Rudeโ mantra after being caught underage drinking.
If weโre infringing on copyright with the Ninja Turtles, we might as well go all the way with various crossovers. Which is why these Turtles seems to be clashing with The Predator, the Tall Man from Phantasm, a Freddy Krueger inspired witch, Jason Vorhees, and straight up friggenโ Batman. If youโre going to tread troubled water using the TMNT without permission, why not go for so many characters it would just be a legal headache?

(Left) The Turtles take on a Party City Halloween Clearance Villain. (Middle) Local murderer realizes drowning turtles was an ignorant plan (Right) Donatello imprisons The Predator to stop future sequels once and for all.
I can only speak for myself when I say I devoured anything โNinja Turtlesโ as child due to my lack of quality control. Seeing these bizarre works of bootlegged fanfiction make me wonder what little Russian boys and girls think of the TMNT ofย theirย day if they grew up on these books. Sure, Americans might recall our beloved Turtle Heroes battling Krang, Rat King, and Mutagen Man from doing some sort of nonsense in New York City and celebrating their victory with a hot pizza. But Sergey over in the gulag but remember when the Ninja Turtles liberated a third world country with AK-47s from a goblin faced witch doctor. Apples and oranges.

(Left) The turtles try to survive as PG in an R rated universe (Middle) Donatello realizes a stick might not be the best weapon to stop a T-Rex (Right) Raph takes advantage of unconscious fantasy ogre.
We now live in an era where the Turtles have crossed paths with Batman, Ghostbusters, Power Rangers, as well asย themselves. But, I mean, if you ever wondered how theyโd get along with The Predator, a Xenomorph, or the Tall Man from Phantasmโฆthen look no further. You can find these glorious works of art from these booksย right here. I highly advise you spend a quiet evening taking these in with your favorite kind of medium thin crust and a fine glass of Roseโ.ย You wonโt regret it.
ChrisDoesComics.com is still your retro corner for comfy comic culture. Until next time dudes and dudettes…
